5 Main Challenges for Early Childhood Education Teachers
November 14, 2022

As an early childhood education teacher, you're responsible for helping your students develop the necessary skills and knowledge to enter primary school. However, there are many challenges that come with this role.

Here are five common ones that you may encounter in your classroom.

Managing Your Students

One of the biggest challenges early childhood teachers face is managing their students. It can be difficult to keep students engaged, especially if they are young or have behavioural problems.

To manage your class well:

1. Be patient with each student's learning pace and needs. A student who learns quickly may become bored by the lesson if they’ve already mastered it; a slower learner might need extra time to complete an assignment.

2. Be firm but flexible when enforcing rules. Consistently enforcing discipline will help set boundaries for acceptable behaviour in your classroom—and establish trust between yourself and your students that you'll enforce those boundaries fairly—but don't forget about compassion!

Declining Mental Health of Teachers and Students

While many teachers look forward to the start of each school year as an opportunity to grow and learn alongside their students, it can also be a time of considerable stress. Students are under more pressure than ever to succeed, both academically and socially.

At the same time, many schools are experiencing cuts in funding for staff and resources. These factors often result in high teacher workloads, which can lead to burnout or even mental health issues among educators.

Long Hours and Few Sick Days

While teaching early childhood education may be a rewarding career, it can also be extremely demanding and high-pressure. Teachers work long hours, often without any extra pay or recognition for their time. In addition, they are not given enough sick days to take care of their own needs and those of their families.

While all teachers face this issue, early childhood educators face the particular problem of student-teacher ratios. So if a teacher calls in sick, it can lead to staffing problems since a certain number of professionals need to be present depending on the size of the classroom.

Low Pay

One of the biggest challenges in early childhood education is low pay, which is a barrier to attracting and retaining teachers. It also makes it difficult for teachers to move up in their careers, or to work at all.

Early childhood educator salaries in Canada range from $14.00 to $19.40 per hour. Compared to the average salary in Canada ($36.92 per hour), childhood educators are definitely underpaid.

Lack of Recognition

Another challenge that early childhood education teachers face is a lack of recognition. Although several essential cognitive developments occur before the age of 5, it’s often not acknowledged how much these teachers do for their students or the importance of what they do.

But despite these challenges, it’s important to recognize that a career as an early childhood educator offers many benefits like working with young children at a time when they are most open to learning, having a chance to make a difference in someone's life, helping kids develop socially and emotionally, and having fun yourself while making money!
