How to Get Into Cyber Security if You Have No Technical Experience at All
October 13, 2022

An average American spends around 7 hours per day online, which shows how pervasive the internet is in our lives. With a large chunk of our lives being spent online, there is a growing importance to cybersecurity. Cybersecurity specialists have one of the most in-demand skill sets in the US. Cybersecurity is the practice of protecting computers, networks, and data from unauthorized access or attacks. It's a broad and ever-changing field, but it generally includes firewalls, antivirus software, encryption, and network monitoring.

Cybersecurity is a vast field with different job roles, so no matter what your background, there is something everyone can contribute to this area. If you’re interested in getting into cyber security but don’t have any technical experience at all, here are some ways to get started.

Do Your Research

The first thing to do before you decide to make the switch is to do thorough research on the available information regarding cybersecurity online. You can look up types of job roles, certifications, online communities, and more and get a feel of what is in store for you.

With this field's growth in demand and a huge skills gap, you can easily transition to many entry-level positions.

Cybersecurity Career Paths

There are two main career streams you can choose from in the field of cybersecurity: analysts and engineers.

Cybersecurity analysts focus more on research and analysis and try to solve problems creatively. They're responsible for monitoring systems and networks for any signs of hacking attempts or vulnerabilities and any suspicious activity that could lead to an attack. After joining as an analyst and growing your career, you could take up the role of a manager overseeing the entire security team in the company. You will need strong analytical and problem-solving skills with an understanding of information security.

Cybersecurity engineers are much more technically focused. They understand how the hardware and software systems work. They are also responsible for ensuring that all devices connected to a network are secure and designing tools to identify and fix any vulnerabilities. Cybersecurity engineers need a sound technical understanding of information systems, security systems, and how computer networks work. Learning the fundamentals of network security will also be helpful for this role.

Learn About Cybersecurity

There are many certifications for various aspects of cybersecurity, including ethical hacking, network administration for security professionals, and more! Certifications show potential employers that you know what you're doing and give them confidence that they'll be hiring someone who knows what they're doing—which is key when hiring for this type of role! You could also enroll in the cybersecurity course provided by Computek College, where you will learn all aspects of cybersecurity that any beginner can grasp.

Build Your Network

Next, build your network. It means connecting with people who are already working in the field so that they can help you find an entry-level job in cyber security. You can do this by attending meetups and conferences related to cyber security or joining online communities where people who work in this industry hang out.

Hopefully, the above information has given you the headstart required to begin your career in cybersecurity. Enrolling in Computek College’s Computer Network and Cyber Security Engineering course will make you industry ready. Contact us today for more details.
