The Homeless Shelter Worker Program is a workforce development and social service initiative designed to recruit, train, and retain qualified individuals to serve in frontline roles within homeless shelters. This program addresses the dual challenges of increasing homelessness and the critical shortage of trained shelter staff by providing targeted training, career development pathways, and ongoing support to shelter workers. The totality of 30 hours will be delivered 10 hours per week over 2 weeks as below

Week 1: Communication, Documentation & Community Awareness
Estimated Hours: 10 hrs
Includes: Communication skills, professional documentation, overview of homelessness in the GTA and Ontario, 211 services, and government support programs
Week 2: Therapeutic Interventions & Professional Boundaries
Estimated Hours: 10 hrs
Includes: Client engagement techniques, art/play therapy, behavior modification, CBT, solution-focused therapy, and maintaining ethical, emotional, and physical boundaries
Week 3: Mental Health, Crisis Management & Legal Awareness
Estimated Hours: 10 hrs
Includes: Mental health disorders, grief and loss support, crisis management strategies, and awareness of applicable laws and legal services
Assessment
Estimated Hours: 1.5 hrs
Includes: Final assessment with multiple-choice and scenario-based questions on trauma-informed care, shelter operations, and ethical responsibilities
