Is Application Security Part of Cyber Security?

Cybersecurity is something that is becoming increasingly important in this day and age. With a lot of work turning remote with the pandemic, a lot of businesses moved their data online, and even now that businesses are starting to shift back to in-person, quite a few still keep their data online for the ease it provides. Because of this, security measures are extremely important, to the point that many jobs have sprung up that involve cyber security, including application security.

To learn more about this branch of cyber security, including why it’s important and what requirements are needed to work in the field, merely read on!

What Is Application Security?

Application security is an umbrella term that covers best practices relating to the use of security software, hardware, and techniques, as well as the best practices and procedures to protect applications from external threats. What this means is that someone who works in application security, or appsec as it’s known for short, is someone with the knowledge and wherewithal to know what practices and procedures are best to keep computer applications safe from cyber threats.

Why Is Application Security Important?

Imagine this: you work for a medical office, and they just moved all of their data collection to a cloud-based server. This has been a great plus, as it allows medical professionals to easily trade information that needs to be discussed to better help their patients, and there’s no more need for giant filing cabinets in the office. However, a hacker decides to leak the personal information of all of the office’s patients.

This is the perfect example of what can happen if someone who works in application security is not present or not well-informed. Cloud-based systems are gaining popularity, and because of this, those that work in cyber security need to be aware of how best to protect the data on the cloud-based servers.

Data is important to protect, as malicious threats are present in the cyber network. Businesses can gain many advantages from having data stored online, but they need to be aware of the security risks involved. An application security worker can come in and see that the information is not only secured but done so in a way that is efficient and easy to maintain so that no incidents happen.

What Is Required to Work in Application Security?

As is to be expected, for someone who works in application security, knowledge of cybersecurity and computer networking is required. Luckily, programs exist that can help educate those interested in this branch of cybersecurity, which typically pays an average salary of around $84,000 CAD a year due to the technical knowledge and importance of such positions.

If you have a brain for application security, including one that understands cloud infrastructure, is good at business communication, and knows the time and place for ethical hacking, then a career in application security would be worth looking into!
