On September 17–19, 2025, Computek College hosted a three-day Resume & Refreshments Workshop across our Markham, Ajax, and Scarborough campuses. The event focused on helping students, alumni, and prospective students build stronger resumes, understand the value of LinkedIn for career growth, and learn the importance of professional networking.
These workshops were designed to give attendees practical, professional resume-building tips while creating opportunities to connect with peers, the community, and Computek College staff.
The event was co-organized with our Career Services team, who provided personalized advice on how to tailor resumes to specific career paths and industry requirements.
If you missed the workshop, don’t worry—we’ve got you covered. Here are our top three resume tips to help you stand out in your job search:
- Tailor Your Resume for Every Job Application
When applying for a position, carefully review the job description. Identify the skills and experience the employer is seeking, then customize your resume to highlight those qualifications.
Use the exact keywords listed in the job posting because many HR departments use applicant tracking systems (ATS) that scan for keyword matches. A tailored resume increases your chances of passing through the ATS and catching a recruiter’s attention.
- Don’t Skip the Cover Letter
While not every job requires a cover letter, if it’s listed as a requirement, failing to include one can result in automatic disqualification.
Your cover letter is more than just a summary of your resume; it’s your chance to tell your professional story. Share how you developed your skills, highlight key achievements, and express your passion for the industry and company.
A well-written cover letter personalizes your application and helps recruiters understand why you’re the right fit for the role.
- Showcase Your International and Transferable Skills
Never underestimate the value of your international experience or diverse background. Even if your previous roles don’t perfectly align with your current job search, emphasize your transferable skills–strengths that apply across industries.
Examples of transferable skills include:
- Communication
- Leadership
- Problem-solving
- Time management
- Teamwork
These skills demonstrate adaptability and show employers that you bring a well-rounded perspective to their team. Let your unique experience be a strength that sets you apart.
